The Fall 2001 Season in North Dakota

Most of the state received below average precipitation during the fall season, and temperatures were above average.  Many rivers and lakes in the western half of the state were low by the end of the period, and some smaller wetlands were dry for the first time in several years.  Water levels in the east declined, but were still well above the long term average.  November  was particularily warm, with even small bodies of water open to the 25th of the month. 

A few highlights of the fall included the first fall report for Red-shouldered Hawk, the fourth nesting record for Black-necked Stilt, the third Selasphorous hummingbird, and a possible second state record Prairie Warbler.

Ring-necked Pheasant - 8/4 (1) Steele (DLK). 11/20 (200) Stark (HHH).  Large numbers of birds in the southwest, but a shortage of young birds (HCT).

 

Ruffed Grouse - 11/21 (1) flushed in N. Fargo (DPW).  Last reported from Fargo in 1981.
